Dress Day

The GSA (Gay Straight Alliance) got to plan and help implement an amazing event yesterday called Dress Day. This event was based on the idea of teens showing up and just trying on clothes without the idea or restrictions of gender. It was really wonderful to see teens grasp the concept that clothes are just that and embrace trying on different styles. Read on to see pictures from the event!

The local consignment store My Girlfriend's Wardrobe donated lots of fantastic clothes for the teens to try on and take home after the event. The teens really went for this and all left with clothes that made them feel confident, regardless of the connotations of gender. This was really beautiful to see teens embracing their identity and take one more step to ending stereotypes associated with clothes.

My friend also came to assist at the event and help style the teens. She has a great vintage store Get Proper Vintage and was able to provide the teens with expert advice. Another staff member did hair and makeup and a teen took photos using the instax printer. For those teens who wanted to participate but not try on lots of clothes I also provided the option of making supportive Artist Trading Cards.

It was a fantastic day! Email me for more information on set up, supplies, or the concept! dstates@yorklibraries.org
All the teens ended up wearing ties and blazers and taking them home! I think a trend was started.

Looking fancy with a blazer!

All learning how to tie a tie!

Tie and make up! Fancy!

Rainbow clothes!
